Mumbai’s Famous Berry Pulao

Berry Pulao, a popular Parsi comfort meal, has a unique story. It’s a dish that was brought to Western India by Iranian immigrants in the 19th century. Over time, it absorbed Parsi culinary influences and evolved into its present form, becoming a staple of ‘Irani Cafes’ all over Mumbai, with the famous Britannia Cafe leading the way—one of my favorite places to hang out during my college and work days. These charming cafes have played a significant role in shaping modern Parsi cuisine.

Traditionally, the dish features barberries (zereshk), which are more tart than sweet. For this recipe, we’re switching things up a bit with cranberries. They’re easy to find, festive, and while a bit sweeter than barberries, they add their own special touch.

We use lamb as our main protein—perfect for larger gatherings or family meals where everyone can share a comforting pot of fragrant pulao. But if lamb isn’t your preference, don’t worry! You can easily make a simpler vegetarian or chicken version. Another traditional favorite twist is adding meatballs to the pulao, along with or instead of the meat. We’ve also added a touch of our fragrant Simply Bhonu Garam Masala spice blend, giving the dish an extra layer of warmth and complexity. No matter how you choose to make it, this Berry Pulao is all about bringing people together around good food, and a little taste of history.
